Women in Media National Co-convenor and ABC Journalist Kathy McLeish will welcome delegates to day two of the conference.
McLeish is a senior journalist with the ABC. She’s reported widely across network programs including 7.30, Landline, Australian Story and ABC news and current affairs. Other roles include executive producer of Stateline and 7.30 Qld and producer of several documentaries and specials for the ABC.
As a reporter, she’s covered assignments ranging from the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, the Nauru detention centre riots, the last Mentoring Taskforce handover in Afghanistan, Queensland’s major natural disasters, has trekked in the Simpson desert after floods and been lucky to be one of the few people to have seen a night parrot in the wild.
She was named Queensland Journalist of the Year and Investigative Journalist of the Year for a series of stories which exposed serious political and bureaucratic failures that led to the closure of the state’s youth mental health facility and the death of three teenagers. The coverage triggered a $15 million inquiry and a massive restructuring of youth mental health services in Queensland.
McLeish is the convenor and a founding member of Women in Media, Queensland.
